A cultural overview of current and upcoming happenings & must-sees, giving an insight in the YS weekly inspirations!

This week celebrates female power, with three upcoming exhibitions focusiing on female artists, bodies and dancers. 

  

Feminist Avant-Garde of the 70s at the Photographers Gallery

Until 29 January 

The exhibition highlights groundbreaking practices that shaped the feminist art movement and provides a timely reminder of the wide impact of a generation of artists. Curator Gabriele Schor coined the term Feminist Avant-Garde to underline the pioneering achievements of these artists. The exhibition includes the influential work of Katalin Ladik, Nil Yalter, Birgit Jürgenssen and Sanja Iveković.

Terrains of the body at Whitechapel gallery

Photography from the National Museum of Women in arts.   By turning their camera to women, including themselves, these artists embrace the female body as a vital medium for storytelling, expressing identity and reflecting individual and collective experience. Featuring work by: Marina Abramović, Rineke Dijkstra, and Nan Goldin.

Sonia Boyce: We move in her way, at the ICA

1 February - 16 April

British artist Sonia Boyce is creating an artwork involving exploratory vocal and movement performances of Elaine Mitchener, Barbara gamper and her dancers. The dance performance lets the participants interact with playfulness during the open-ended - making references to anarchic movement Dada and Brazilian artist Lygia Clark and showcasing distinct sculptural objects.
